Dark Before The Dawn –
Wellness Retreat for the Black Community

This will be my second event in support Kendra Coupland and her Dark Before the Dawn Wellness Retreat.

Dark Before The Dawn aims to create a safe, inclusive environment for Black healing through holistic, cultural, and integrative wellness practices and modalities. Kendra’s next retreat will be held at a new venue, at Zajac Ranch in Mission, BC in the Fall.
Funds raised from A Space to Be will again be in support of Kendra and the retreat – supporting retreat costs and expenses as well as giving opportunity to those members of the community that cannot otherwise attend.

DATE TBD, 2022

in support of:
Rainbow Refugee x One Love Circle Of Hope – #HelpHesamComeToCanada

location: TBD

Over the last decade, my chosen LGBTQ+ family in Vancouver has grown into something words can’t describe. Many of those beautiful souls have come here as refugees from places like Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Turkey. Each of them carried their own unique stories – and because they were brave enough to leave their homes to start new chapters here in Vancouver, they are now living freely, able to make new ones.

That is why initiatives like Rainbow Refugee’s “Circles of Hope” are so special and I am so honoured that I have had the chance to work with my friends to help someone else create a story of their own here in Vancouver.

Over the past year, I have been a part of @onelovecircleofhope which, in partnership with @rainbowrefugeecanada, has been helping Hesam with the process of escaping LGBTQ+ persecution in Turkey and start a new life in Canada.

Hesam (not his real name to protect his identity) is a caring, artistic, young gay man who fled his home country of Iran and has been stuck living as a refugee in Turkey for the past five years.

Through this program and the help of many supporters, One Love Circle of Hope is one step closer to overseeing Hesam’s smooth arrival in Canada, is more prepared than ever to be able to invest in his long-term success, like providing ongoing social support, including opportunities for guidance, community and friendship building, and other forms of essential aid.

Money raised from this event will be in support of Rainbow Refugee and #HelpHesamComeToCanada.

Funds Raised: $1000.00

Sunday, February 21st, 2021

location: 578 Powell Street // Good Side Photo Studio

For this first event on Sunday, February 21st, funds from the sessions booked will be going towards Kendra Coupland and her important initiatives that center Black wellness in the community. https://www.kendracoupland.com/about-kendra/

Not only does she use healing photography as a tool to help people with self inquiry and trauma healing, she is also a wellness coach and yoga teacher, and has founded the “Spiritual Wellness For Black Bodies” workshops and the “Dark Before The Dawn” wellness retreat for the Black community. https://www.kendracoupland.com/retreats/dark-before-the-dawn/

This local retreat centers around healing and wellness specifically for Black folx, and focuses on community building, rest and restoration.

One of the main goals for the next Dark Before The Dawn retreat is to secure a space that is FULLY accessible and will allow those that rely on mobility devices, to attend and even access nature, which is huge!

So I am hoping that the money raised from these sessions can help go towards finding and locking down that space!

Please check out the video featuring past attendees looking back on their experiences and their emotional reactions to being there:
